‘Making a Difference’ – A Volunteers Clinical Trial Story

At Scientia Clinical Research, we are dedicated to advancing medical science through collaborative clinical trials. Our success is made possible by the invaluable contributions of our study participants. In this feature, we share the story of Jacky, a paid volunteer who recently took part in one of our clinical trials.

Their experience offers a personal perspective on the clinical trial process and highlights the critical role participants play in medical research.

Can you tell us a little about yourself? (age, background, general health, etc)

Hi, I’m 22 years old and originally from Hong Kong, recently arrived in Sydney and have been living here for roughly 3 years.

What motivated you to participate in a clinical trial?

I’ve always been interested in cutting-edge research and innovation. Personally, I like to learn and experiment with new technologies which can improve quality of life.
And morally, medical phase I trials can potentially save lots of lives in the future.

Had you ever taken part in a clinical trial before, or was this your first experience?

I researched several facilities before doing my first clinical study – this one I have just completed is actually my 4th here at Scientia Clinical Research.

Why did you choose Scientia instead of other research facilities?

One obvious major consideration would be its close proximity to where I live. Another is the amazing access to public transport.

Additionally, Scientia was the most responsive among all centres I’ve contacted. Either organising visits and follow ups, or changing visit time at a rather short notice, they will sort it out for you.

How did you first hear about our clinical trial?

The first time I became aware of clinical research was through a friend in a different state, so I looked online and found out about Scientia Clinical Research here in Sydney.

What were your initial thoughts or concerns before signing up?

Before my first study I remember being excited and nervous, but also I was looking forward to several nights in confinement where I could work on my laptop without too many distractions
Like anyone thinking about a first clinical trial, concerns about side effects are certainly there, in addition to living with other people (whom you’ve never met) for several days.

Did you discuss your decision with family or friends? What was their reaction?

I chose not to, as my families understanding (or lack thereof) of what clinical research is would have resulted in an uninformed and stern “no”.

What information or reassurance helped you decide to proceed?

The website was great and answered almost all of the questions I had, but talking with the great Drs and nurses whilst I was screening provided me with a lot of reassurance and confidence. In addition, The clarity and the thoroughness of the consent form and participant information.

Onboarding & Participation

Can you walk us through the process of enrolling in the study?

It is very simple and as this was my 4th study I am now very familiar with the process – basically, you have a look at the website and see what study suits you, or you can call the Recruitment Team and they can try and fit you in to a study, or you can register directly on Scientia website.

How did you find the screening and eligibility process?

This was very simple too – you are asked a lot of questions on the phone before you even come in, which is great so it doesn’t waste your time. If you come in for screening you do a few simple tests and are out within the hour.

What was your experience like during the consent process? Did you feel well-informed about the trial?

Yes, there is a lot of paperwork, but the Recruitment Team and also the Drs and nurses help you answer any questions you have.

How would you describe your first visit to the clinic?

This was a few years ago for me now, but I remember being cautious but excited, but once I was on the study I found it really exciting…I met a lot of new people and quickly learned a lot about the clinical research process…from the inside!

How easy or difficult was it to fit the trial into your daily routine?

Very easy – I’m actually studying right now, 100% remotely, so I did a lot of university work whilst I was here. Scientia’s facility is really comfortable too.

During the Study

What did a typical study visit look like for you?

Well, I spent most of my time here doing university work and online gaming!
The recreation area is nice though, with a new Playstation 5 and lots of games, books, 2 large TV’s with loads of movies…there is plenty to do, especially if you bring your own laptop and have work to do.

Were the procedures or tests what you expected?

Pretty much, you obviously get poked and prodded a lot (lol) but that is to be expected. They try to give you maximum amount of freedom while in the unit. As long as it does not interfere with the trials schedule.

How did you feel about the level of care and attention from the clinical staff?

It was great – the Drs and nurses are around 24/7 so the care and attention is constant.

Did you feel safe and comfortable throughout the trial?

Yes, the whole time. There are so many Drs and nurses around, the equipment is all brand new and knowing that Scientia is actually in the Prince of Wales Hospital grounds I also found very reassuring.

Post-Study & Overall Experience

What happened when the study ended? Were there any follow-up visits?

Yes, there were 2 follow-up visits where I came back to Scientia, and a bit of correspondence, but then payment was made a couple of weeks after the study ended…it was all quite easy.

The most recent trials money actually arrived only 2 days after my last visit!

How did you feel about the overall experience?

Very easy and comfortable – like I said, this was my 4th study and I will definitely be looking to do another one. Scientia is also a not-for-profit, so that gives you confidence that they are investing money back into clinical research.

What advice would you give to someone considering joining a clinical trial?

I would encourage them to look into it – if you can find a trial which suits you then it is a great opportunity to make some money, but also help medical research. And if you are a medical student, it’s a great education.
For in-unit staying tips, be sure to bring your slippers and ‘self-entertaining’ stuff. Be it a laptop, a book, headphones and obviously your phone.

What was the most rewarding or surprising aspect of the trial for you?

Haha, well getting paid several thousand dollars was quite rewarding! But knowing you are helping medical research and possibly making a difference to other peoples lives is a great feeling.

If you had to describe your experience in three words, what would they be?

Exciting, unique, rewarding.

Would you recommend clinical trial participation to others? Why?

Yes, I think it’s a great unique experience and really helps people understand what clinical trials are about.
